VIDEO MODE CONFIGURATION Welcome to GDS! The following procedure automatically configures GDS to run with your display hardware. Read the section below titled "INSTRUCTIONS" before you continue. QUICK NOTE: If you have a VESA compatible SVGA and GDS doesn't recognize all of the modes the card is supposed to support, delete the file called "CONFIG" and run GDS again by specifying '/VESA' on the command line (Type: GDS /VESA). QUICK START FOR IMPATIENT USERS: 1) DO NOT just hit [Esc] to exit the configuration so you can run GDS. Go through the configuration like a normal human, and you'll be happier. 2) Don't assume the machine is crashed until you've waited for at least 20 seconds without hearing a beep. Some video cards take a long time. 3) If GDS beeps, that means a test pattern was drawn, even if you can't see it properly. Press 'Y' to accept the mode, 'N' to kill it. 4) If you determine that the machine is crashing after you type 'Y' to approve a certain mode, see "*** CRASHING MODES ***" below. 5) If you are not getting all of the modes you think you should be getting, GDS is probably unable to detect the video card properly. Try /VESA on the command line, and if that doesn't work, call. INSTRUCTIONS GDS analyzes each mode to determine if it is valid. YOU MAY SEE THE SCREEN GO CRAZY, which MAY be normal. Allow 10-15 seconds delay before assuming that the machine is crashed. We have seen video cards take up to 30 seconds to respond correctly with a video mode. Once GDS has determined that a mode seems OK, GDS draws a test pattern on the screen and beeps once. If the screen looks OK, then press 'Y'. When you press 'Y', GDS will immediately continue on to the next mode. Repeat this process until GDS prompts you (in text mode) to save the configuration. IF YOU HEAR A BEEP BUT DON'T SEE A GOOD TEST PATTERN, PRESS 'N'. When you press 'N', GDS should immediately change the state of the video system, which you should be able to notice. If you do not notice a change within 20 seconds, reset your machine. Many video monitors cannot support certain modes because of their high frequency scan rates. This type of incompatibility is very common, and is nothing to be worried about. If GDS tries to set a mode that your monitor does not support, the screen may flicker, quickly shear and scroll in various directions, flash on and off, and generally look very bad. If this happens, wait for the beep, and just press 'N'. *** CRASHING MODES *** If GDS crashes immediately after pressing [Enter] from this text screen, call us at (510)449-9079. This means that CGA 640x200 monochrome mode is crashing the machine. If the machine locks up after pressing 'Y' after a good mode, go through the following steps to omit the mode manually: 1) Start GDS again, and remember the screen resolution (displayed at the upper left of each screen). When the machine locks up again, you'll now remember what mode came just before it. Reset the machine again. 2) Start GDS again, and go through the modes until you get to the mode just before where the machine locked up in step 1. Press [Enter] for this mode rather than 'Y'. GDS will switch to text mode and display a window in the middle of the screen. 3) Press 'Y'. GDS will redo the text window to display the resolution of the mode which is locking up the machine. 4) Press 'N' to kill the mode which is locking the machine. Now GDS should redo the text window to display the mode AFTER the mode which was locking up the machine. At this point, it may be OK to press [Enter], which will put you back into the graphics 'Y'/'N' process again. If this locks up the machine again, then keep repeating steps 2-4 but keep manually killing each mode that you know locks up the machine. NOTE: To print this file, copy GDSMODE.TXT to your printer. Your printer's port name may be PRN, LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3 depending on your machine's setup.
